Genzyme is a TOP-5 biopharmaceutical company with nine major marketed therapeutic products. Genzyme is building a new manufacturing facility for biopharmaceuticals, in particular monoclonal antibodies: Genzyme Flanders in Geel (Belgium). The first phase includes two 10,000L stirred tank bioreactors, 1 purification train and state-of-the-art QC labs in a 4,000m2 administration building. Genzyme Flanders will be a multi-product, campaign-based facility for fed-batch mammalian cell culture production. The first phase of construction and validation will become operational by mid 2005. The facility of Geel can accommodate a total capacity of six bioreactors of 10,000L.
